My Official Video for “Ice”

I recently put together an “official” video for Cea Serin’s cover version of Sarah McLachlan’s “Ice.”  The song comes off our new album that went public today, Oct. 6th.  Here’s the video and here’s how I did it.

I used a Sony HDR-CX550 camera to film most of the performance footage of the video.  Rory actually filmed his performance himself and sent it to me via Dropbox.  The rest of the footage was either bought as stock footage or I shot it myself.  There are actually a lot of places online that will sell you footage of whatever you’re looking for.

Once I had mapped out what I wanted the video to show I either filmed stuff or searched out stock footage of what I needed.  The performance footage comes from the actual recording sessions for the song because I knew I’d be doing a video for it when the album came out.

So, once I had all the footage it all came down to assembling things.  One of the things I like to do is film light and effects in-camera and then overlay it on real footage. As you watch the video there’s a lot of effects over what you see.  This isn’t a plug-in.  This is the result of filming the sun through broken glass, over exposing light sources, zooming in to bring things too close, etc etc.  I’ll then adjust the opacity of two sources and blend them together.  It’s a nice ethereal effect to employ.

I used Sony Vegas 10 to edit the footage and that, my friends, is that.

It’s Cea Serin’s first video and it’s a cover song. Yes, I know. But it’s short and sweet and not a 10 to 20 minute long epic. “Ice” is a cover of a Sarah McLachlan song and the CS version is a little different than the original version. We took the acoustic guitar part and transplanted it to the piano. We also added some additional sections to it. We just had to have a solo in it, right?

“Ice” is also the first Cea Serin song where I played guitar in a Cea Serin recording (with the exception to some clean guitar parts in “The Victim Cult). Keith Warman recorded the excellent solo but the guitar and bass were performed by me. The drums and percurssion were handled by Rory Faciane.

So here it is:

Please share it with your friends.
